Preparing Your Outdoor Space for Fall: Must-Have Decor and Furniture Tips

As the temperatures start to dip and the leaves begin to turn, it’s the perfect time to refresh your outdoor space for the cozy season ahead. Whether you’re looking forward to hosting fall get-togethers, cozying up with a warm drink, or simply enjoying the crisp autumn air, preparing your patio, deck, or backyard for fall can create a welcoming, comfortable environment. Here are some simple tips to help you transition your outdoor area from summer to fall, complete with furniture and decor ideas that capture the beauty of the season.

1. Bring Out the Cozy Textures

Fall is all about warmth and comfort, so start by incorporating soft, cozy textures into your outdoor space. Swap out summer’s lighter fabrics for thicker, more insulating options like plush throws, knit blankets, and flannel pillows. Consider fall-inspired hues such as burnt orange, deep reds, and earthy browns to create an autumnal feel. These small changes can make a big difference in creating a warm and inviting outdoor space.

Product Tip: Try adding a few outdoor-friendly throw pillows and blankets from our cozy fall collection to enhance both style and comfort.

2. Add Warmth with Outdoor Heaters or Fire Pits

As the evenings grow cooler, an outdoor heater or fire pit becomes a must-have addition to your patio or backyard. Not only do they extend the use of your outdoor space well into the colder months, but they also create a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for gathering with friends and family.

A stylish fire pit can double as a focal point, while a sleek outdoor heater can blend seamlessly with your patio decor. With a wide range of options available, you’re sure to find the perfect piece that complements your existing setup.

3. Switch to Autumnal Lighting

Lighting is key when setting the mood for outdoor relaxation, especially as the days get shorter. Replace bright summer string lights with warmer, more subtle lighting options that evoke a cozy ambiance. Lanterns, candles, and soft LED lighting can help create that perfect autumn glow.

DIY Tip: For a fun and festive look, try filling glass lanterns or jars with small pumpkins or pine cones, combined with battery-operated candles to create a fall-themed centerpiece.

4. Incorporate Seasonal Plants and Greenery

Don’t forget to update your greenery! Summer flowers may fade, but fall offers an opportunity to introduce rich, colorful plants like mums, ornamental grasses, and even small pumpkins or gourds to decorate your outdoor space. Use planters, urns, or hanging baskets to bring in these autumn accents, adding layers of texture and color.

Product Tip: Our selection of planters and outdoor pots will help you showcase your fall plants in style.

5. Upgrade Your Outdoor Furniture for Year-Round Use

If your outdoor furniture feels more suited for summer lounging, it might be time to upgrade to pieces that are comfortable year-round. Look for durable, weather-resistant furniture that can withstand the elements while maintaining style and comfort. Wicker or metal-framed pieces with plush cushions are great for fall because they offer both durability and coziness. Modular seating options also provide flexibility for gatherings of any size.

Consider adding a fall-inspired rug to anchor your furniture and bring everything together, while also adding warmth underfoot.

Finding Your Perfect Patio Furniture

Your backyard is the hub of social and family life during the summer months. Perfecting your own personal oasis takes time, but finding the ideal backyard basics will help get the job done!  First, let’s tackle how to pick out the perfect patio furniture.

Spend a few days evaluating your backyard.  Take measurements, decide what furniture and accessories you want to include and, determine your budget.

When it comes to patio furniture, consumers have an assortment of tables, chairs, benches, lounge chairs, ottomans, swings, side tables, chaise lounges and even sofas to create the perfect backyard. The biggest decision you’ll have to make is the type of material your patio furniture is made from.

Aluminum

Aluminum’s best quality is its resistance to rust.  It also weathers the sun very well and requires little in the way of maintenance. Aluminum is relatively lightweight compared to other common materials, so rearranging your layout or gathering for winter storage is a simple task.

Wood

Wood furniture is available in several different materials. Cedar and teak are two of the most popular.

Cedar is strong, lightweight and dimensionally stable, meaning it retains its shape despite changes in temperature and humidity. It also dries out fast

er than some other woods, making it less susceptible to moisture rot and bacterial and fungal development. Cedar also gives off a distinctive scent, which is pleasant to people but a deterrent to wood pests, moths and other insects.

Teak does not absorb heat, making it more comfortable to sit in on hot August days.  Additionally, teak is not susceptible to rot or mildew, and it will not warp from exposure to moisture, even if it is left untreated.  The only common drawback of teak is its tendency to change color over the years; many people, however, admire that trait as part of the wood’s unique appeal.

All Weather Wicker

Wicker furniture is very lightweight and surprisingly sturdy. Unlike traditional wicker, all-weather wicker is resistant to harsh elements, so bringing wicker furniture indoors overnight or when it rains is unnecessary.  Investing in good quality cushions can make a décor statement, and wicker is easily painted to match any color scheme.

Wrought iron

Wrought iron furniture is quite heavy and durable enough to be left out over the course of an entire summer.  If it is cared for properly, it can last for decades, which helps offset the expense.  Wrought iron furniture is typically available in a wide variety of designs, from the ornate and complex to more modern, minimalist motifs.

If you’re choosing wrought iron pieces, look at them as a long-term investment; it is best to select a design that you can enjoy for years to come. The thicker the material, the more durable the furniture will likely be.
